GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Methodist men's golf team carded a final-round 296, the only sub-300 round of the tournament, en route to a 14-stroke win in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament hosted by Guilford College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Monarchs, who had entered play tied with Guilford college after Monday's first round, fired the tournament's low round in pulling away for the win with a total of 604 (308-296). Guilford wound up in second place at 618 (308-310), followed by Washington and Lee (310-322--622), Greensboro (318-311--629) and Berry (313-316) in the Top 5.Â
Not only did Methodist capture the team title, but
Jeff Wells became the second straight MU player to capture individual medalist honors after he fired a 66 (-4) on Tuesday and finished with a total of 143 (77-66). He finished four strokes better than Tanner Owen of Wake Forest, who shot 73-74--147. Wells had six birdies on the day, and played both the front and back in 2-under 33. His win comes on the heels of
Mason Stutler's win at the Golfweek Fall Preview two weeks ago.
Also for MU,
Craig Decato finished in a tie for seventh place shooting 74-79-150, and Stutler was tied for 18th after rounds of 79 and 77 gave him a total of 156.
Andrew LePage (83-77--160) was tied for 36th overall, and
Jackson Collier (78-83--161) finished out the team score with a tie for 40th.
Reggie Crews, who was competing as an individual, matched Colliers 161 (83-78) and also finished in a tie for 40th overall.
The Monarchs have now concluded their fall season and will pick things back up in the spring.
