FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's tennis team wrapped up play in the two-day Methodist Fall Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Courts.
The Monarchs captured three consolation championships in singles play to go with a pair of third-place finishes in the consolation brackets as well as a title in the No. 2 doubles flight.
Senior
Kelli Shelton captured the first round consolation bracket of the championship flight. She defeated Hayley Andrews of Guilford, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals. In the finals, she dropped her first set (6-1) to Tori Ryherd of Virginia Wesleyan before winning the second set 6-5, at which point Ryherd retired due to injury.
In the No. 2 singles consolation final, sophomore
Hillary Petruska rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Virginia Wesleyan's Victoria Torres, 0-6, 6-2, 10-7. In the same flight, sophomore
Emily Talley captured third place overall with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dominique Crespo of Guilford.
The No. 3 singles flight featured a similar finish as sophomore
Stephanie Hunter won the consolation bracket, 6-2, 6-1 over Allison Hewett of Guilford and senior
Stacey Brooks was third overall following a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 win over Emily Meyer of Hollins.
On the doubles side, the No. 2 flight was an all-Methodist affair in the finals as Petruska and freshman
Isabella Graf teamed up to record an 8-5 win over Shelton and Brooks.
The Monarchs continue their fall season on Friday when they begin play at the ITA Regional Championships.
