GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Methodist women's track and field came from behind to win their second straight Mason Dixon Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Trailing by 11 at the end of day one, the Monarchs came back with eight first place finishes and 21 All-Conference performances on Sunday to earn 182 points and edge rival Christopher Newport by eight points. Penn State-Behrend finished third with 69 points.
Methodist took the top four spots in the 100 meters paced by
Ashlynn Chavis' winning race in 12.21 seconds.
Bria Wilson was second in 12.53 seconds,
Erica Powell finished third in 12.61 seconds and
Melissa Groce placed fourth in 12.74 seconds. The 200 meters was just as close with Methodist claiming six of the top eight spots all less than six tenths of a second apart. Groce won the race in 25.42 seconds and Chavis was second in 25.45 seconds.
Marlena Rodriguez was fourth and Powell sixth.
Rodriguez won the 400 meters in 57 seconds flat while Groce was fourth and
Ashulyon Pope claimed sixth place in a personal best 59.39.
Kristyn Zeiler earned fifth place in the 1500 meters in 19:01.67 while
Katie Ballard broke her own school record in the steeplechase at 13:35.71.
Brittanie Morris won the 100 meter and 400 meter hurdles while breaking the stadium record in the 100 meter hurdles. The Monarchs also won both the 4x100 and the 4x400 meter relays. The 4x100 team with Chavis, Groce, Powell and Wilson also broke a stadium record.
In Sunday's field events,
Yvonne Goodwyn won the discus in 37.79 meters and placed second in the shot put.
Sherri Owens placed third in the javelin.
Naria Stovall earned a second place finish in the triple jump while Wilson took home fifth place honors.
On the men's side, the Monarchs had eight All-Conference performances on Sunday.
Pierson Singleton led Methodist with fourth place finishes in both the 100 meters (11.16) and 200 meters (22.30).
Donte Smith finished third in the 400 meters in 49.28 seconds and
Calvon Bowden was second in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.67 seconds. The Monarchs teamed up for third place finishes in both relay events.
Adonis Kirkland finished first in the shot put at 14.24 meters and threw a personal best 41.50 meters to place second in the discus.
The Monarchs combined to earn 63 points and finish fifth in the competition. CNU won the event with 162 points.
At the conclusion of the meet, Methodist head coach Duane Ross was named the Mason Dixon Women's Track Coach of the Year.
Methodist will be back in action next weekend at North Carolina A&T's Aggie Classic.
