The women's basketball team will hold their fifth annual event Feb. 18

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist University has partnered with the Kay Yow Cancer Fun to host a “Play 4Kay” basketball game Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. In an effort to increase breast cancer awareness, the Monarchs are working hard to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation Friends of the Cancer Center.

All fans wearing pink to the game will be admitted free with a donation to support breast cancer awareness. The Methodist team will play in pink uniforms to show their support. For fans looking to support the cause, Methodist is selling t-shirts and a new pint glass. Items can be purchased prior to the event at MU basketball games or online. Throughout the game, a silent auction will include autographed items as well as special golf packages and much more!

At halftime of the basketball game, Methodist will honor breast cancer survivors as another way to increase awareness regarding one of the most common invasive cancers among women in the United States.

The national event was rebranded this year after formerly operating as "Pink Zone" under the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The mission remains the same: a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began "Pink Zone" (formerly Think Pink) in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Over the last four events, the Monarchs have raised more than $15,000 toward breast cancer awareness.

“Kay Yow has always been an inspiration to menot only as a coach, but as a player,” said Methodist's Head Coach DeeDee Jarman. “She was devoted to North Carolina State, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, and the game of basketball; we are delighted to have the opportunity to give back.

Tickets for this special game can be purchased at the door. For more information, contact the Methodist University Athletic Department at (910) 630-7175 or visit www.mumonarchs.com/play4kay.

Breast cancer survivors interested in participating in the event should contact DeeDee Jarman at (910) 630-7283 or djarman@methodist.edu.

About the Kay Yow Cancer Fund

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially founded on December 3, 2007, from the vision of the organization's namesake Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach.

Kay Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. Before her death, she joined forces with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation for Cancer Research to form the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.

Since the Fund's inception, $1,300,000 has been raised for scientific research focused on women's cancers thanks to the generosity and continued support of our donors.
