FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist University Director of Athletics, Bob McEvoy, has announced the hiring of Phil Schuman to take over as head coach of the women's lacrosse program.
A graduate of Washington College (Md.), Schuman was a member of the conference champion Shoremen and most recently spent two years as an assistant with the women's lacrosse team.
"We are pleased to welcome Coach Schuman to our staff," McEvoy said. "He brings a wealth of NCAA III lacrosse experience to MU, as a player, coach and dynamic recruiter of lacrosse student-athletes. I am confident that the program is in good hands and we are all anxious to see our program grow over the next few years under Coach Schuman's enthusiastic and high energy leadership."
An All-State goalkeeper in high school, Schuman joined the nationally ranked Washington College men's program. Following graduation, he spent time teaching at the high school level before returning to the sidelines at Washington. Schuman was involved in all aspects of the women's lacrosse program including recruiting and working with the team's defense and goalkeepers.
"I am thankful for the opportunity that Mr. McEvoy and Dr. Hendricks have given me to lead the Methodist University women's lacrosse program," Schuman said. "The athletic department at Methodist has had a great amount of success department-wide and I look forward to becoming a part of the Methodist family."
The lacrosse team is the youngest program in the Methodist athletic department competing for the first time in 2002. The team won a share of the 2005 USA South Championship and won a program-high 11 wins in 2006.
"We have all the tools at Methodist to make our program an exciting opportunity to prospective student-athletes," Schuman added.
