Track and Field Kicks Off at NCAA Championships

Ashlynn Chavis finished third in the long jump

BEREA, Ohio - The 2010 NCAA Track and Field Championships kicked off Thursday at Baldwin-Wallace College.

Methodist University sophomore Ashlynn Chavis finished third in the long jump with a leap of 5.83 meters in her final attempt. Briana Aiken of Texas Lutheranwon won the event with a distance of 5.88 meters.

Freshman Ruby Blackwell won the second heat of the 200 meter preliminaries in a school record time of 24.05 seconds. Blackwell boasts the top time heading into the finals scheduled to take place Saturday.

Junior Greg Bailey also competed in the 200 meters and qualified for the finals finishing third in the first heat in 21.55 seconds.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Pierson Singleton, Stefan Johnson, Cedric McGill, Greg Bailey clocked the best time in the preliminaries finishing in 40.85 seconds. The finals for the 4x100 will also take place on Saturday.

Blackwell and McGill will compete in the 100 meter preliminaries on Friday.
