FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist University women's basketball team was nominated for the 2009 Governor's Volunteer Service Awards based on their work this year.
The North Carolina Commission of Volunteerism describes the award as dedicated to "honor the true spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals, groups and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service."
Women's basketball head coach DeeDee Jarman and her team worked hard this year volunteering countless hours to raise awareness for breast cancer. Their event raised more than $7,000 for the cause. The team has also spent time cleaning up a portion of Ramsey Street they have adopted as well as volunteering for Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) activities like special olympics, reading to elementary school students and collecting cans for the needy. They also volunteered at the Methodist Show You Care Day to help with clean-up and beautification projects on campus.
During an awards banquet Tuesday evening, Jarman accepted a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the team in recognition of their dedication and outstanding service to the state of North Carolina.
