Christopher Newport Claims Fourth Straight Lacrosse Tournament Title

BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team took a commanding lead over the Greensboro Pride on Saturday before claiming their fourth straight tournament championship with an 18-5 win.

It took 21 seconds for the Captains to make their mark with Meghan Harkey scoring the first goal of the game. Christopher Newport went ahead 3-0 in the first nine minutes before Greensboro called a timeout to regroup but with 6:41 to go Shayna Sargent scored the Captains' tenth goal. Christopher Newport added two more before the Pride tallied with a goal from Ashley Nolen on the assist from Chelsea Farley with 1:47 remaining in the half. CNU led 12-1 at the break.

Greensboro's Layne Woodard scored the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to ten, but the Captains came back with four straight. Farley would score twice for the Pride, but Christopher Newport cruised to the 18-5 win.

Chrissy Rogers scored four goals for the Captains while Harkey scored three with an assist, Sargent had three with two assists and Katie Doherty scored two goals with four assists.

Gayle Robinson made six saves in goal for Christopher Newport before Kristen Duca finished in goal with one. Stacey Pulskamp made seven stops for the Pride.

Christopher Newport receives an automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
