BRADENTON, Fla. - Former Methodist pitcher Blake Maxwell entered in the 10th inning of the Boston Red Sox spring training game with the Pittsburgh Pirates and picked up a save in the 15-14 win.
Maxwell spent three years with the Monarchs and set the school record for career saves with 22 before being drafted by the Red Sox in
the 2005 Major League Amateur Draft. Maxwell has spent the last four seasons playing in the Red Sox organization, most recently for the Lancaster JetHawks. In 2008, he finished 5-9 with a 3.32 ERA.
The Red Sox organization is in the midst of 37 spring training games in preparation for the 2009 season. On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates tied the game at 14 in the bottom of the ninth before Boston came back and scored a run in the top of the 10th to take the lead. Maxwell entered in the bottom of the tenth to finish on the mound. He struck out one and walked two without allowing a hit to earn the save.
Maxwell is just one of 21 former Methodist baseball players to play professionally. (
