ABILENE, Texas - After dropping their first two games of the season, the Methodist University baseball team evened their record at 2-2 with two wins on Saturday. The Monarchs defeated the University of Texas - Dallas 13-0 and then came from behind to defeat Whittier 7-6.
Methodist took the early lead with a run in the first inning and then exploded for seven runs in the second inning backed by a two-run home run from senior
Dustin Proctor. The Monarchs scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning and added three additional runs in the eighth. Proctor hit his third home run of the season to give Methodist the 13-0 win.
Freshman Mike Mahaffey had the start on the mound and went seven scoreless innings allowing just two hits. Senior
Chase Cates finished off the win with two innings of relief.
In the second game of the day, Whittier College took the early 2-0 lead, but Methodist closed the gap with a run from sophomore
Tripp Lancaster. Whittier scored their third run of the game in the fourth, but the Monarchs took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Poets tied the game in the top of the sixth, but Lancaster had a RBI single in the bottom of the inning for the Monarchs to regain the lead. Whittier strung together three hits in the top of the seventh to take the 6-5 lead, but Methodist fought back in the ninth inning.
Sophomore
Brian Inghram drew the leadoff walk and senior
Brad Davis singled to right field moving Inghram to third. Davis stole second and
Trey Such singled to left center to score both runs to win the game 7-6.
Sophomore
Tre Britt pitched six and two thirds for the Monarchs with six strikeouts while freshman
Matt Partin finished the game in relief.
