FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist University 2008-09 champions were recognized at halftime of the final football game this season. The cheerleading, women's tennis, track and field and men's and women's golf teams were honored for their success last spring.
The 2009 Methodist University cheerleading team competed at NCA Nationals where they tied the school’s best performance by placing third at NCA College Nationals. They were the first all girl cheerleading team representing Methodist in National Competition.
The Methodist University women’s tennis team earned their second consecutive USA South Championship last spring after finishing conference play undefeated. The Monarchs went 18-3 during the regular season before finishing second at the conference tournament.
The Methodist University track and field team sent representatives to the 2009 Indoor and Outdoor NCAA National Championships. The Monarchs competed with the top track and field athletes in Division III earning multiple All-American honors by finishing in the top eight.
Last May, Methodist University hosted a historic event with the first combined men’s and women’s golf national championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Both teams are currently ranked number one by their respective coaching associations. The men’s team earned a bid to the National Championship last year by winning their seventh consecutive USA South Conference Championship. The Monarchs finished third at the National Championship.
The Methodist University women’s golf team kept the dynasty alive with their 12th straight National Championship. The Monarchs won the title by 25 strokes to claim their 22nd championship in program history. The team was led by Susan Martin, who took back-to-back individual honors. The women were presented their National Championship rings during the recognition ceremony Saturday.
