FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's tennis team played a number of matches in the first day of their Invitational.
In the A flight singles,
Matthew Taylor opened up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nelson (Guilford) before falling 1-6, 1-6 to Saari (NC Wesleyan).
Rob Schmidt won 7-6, 4-6, 10-5 over Egorov (Averett) but lost 1-6, 0-6 to Rumyantsev (NC Wesleyan).
Andrew Schwepfinger lost 2-6, 6-4, 3-10 to Prostak (NC Wesleyan) and then fell 4-6, 1-6 to Mason-Deese (Guilford).
In the B flight draw,
Drew Schrum lost 1-6, 1-6 to Prata (NC Wesleyan) but defeated Cheong (Guilford) 6-4, 6-3 in a consolation match.
Brad Tulenko beat Cheong 6-0, 6-4 in the first round before falling 0-6, 2-6 to Prata.
Eric Smith lost 1-6, 2-6 to Kautonen (NC Wesleyan) and
Justin Campbell lost 2-6, 3-6 to Bukatin (NC Wesleyan). Smith beat Campbell 6-1, 6-0 in a consolation match.
Sean Teeter lost 0-6, 0-6 to Ribvenstedt (NC Wesleyan) but defeated Cox (Guilford) 6-1, 6-2.
Reid Baker won his first match 6-0, 6-2 over Cox but lost 0-6, 1-6 to Ribbenstedt. #Neil Perron won 6-0, 6-2 over Sanford (Averett) before falling 0-6, 0-6 to Garcia (NC Wesleyan).
The C flight singles included six more Methodist players.
Kevin Wickham lost 0-6, 1-6 to Cakmak (NC Wesleyan) while
Mark Tarentino also lost to Cakmak.
Anthony Santonastaso lost 4-6, 3-6 to Arguimbar (Guilford) but knocked off Ross (Guilford).
Steven Burkett defeated Ross but lost to Arguimbar.
Sean Smith lost 0-6, 1-6 to Forsdike (NC Wesleyan) but defeated Johnson (Guilford).
Justin Johnson beat Johnson (Guilford) but also lost to Forsdike.
Steve Strawn won 7-5, 6-2 over Bason (Averett).
In A flight doubles, Schwepfinger and Smith came up short 5-8 to Filonov/Sonn (NC Wesleyan) and lost to Chase/Mason-Deese (Guilford) in a consolation match. Taylor/Clayton won their first match 8-2 over Torres/Faidutti (Averett) but lost 2-8 to Saari/Rumyantsev (NC Wesleyan). Campbell/Baker lost to Saari/Rumyantsev in the first round.
Tulenko and Eric Smith won 8-5 in the B flight doubles over Cox/Nelson before falling 0-8 to Cakmak/Lemongo (NC Wesleyan). Smith and Tarentino lost to Cheong/Arguimbar in C flight doubles but defeeated Johnson/Ross (Guilford). Johnson/Strawn picked up an 8-2 win over Johnson/Ross before falling to Cheong/Arguimbar. Santonastaso/Wickham lost to Ribbenstedt/Bason while Teeter/Burkett won their first doubles match.
